The Vocal Art Ensemble presents "Anos: Songs for the Seasons"
This December, the Davis a capella chorus The Vocal Art Ensemble (VAE), directed by Tracia Barbieri, presents a set of concerts about all four seasons. Framing the performance is a series of four songs, named after each season, by American composer Joshua Shank, who is quickly becoming recognized as a talented and innovative young composer. His music has been called "ethereal" and "evocative and atmospheric" (Santa Barbara News-Press). These particular works set poetry by renowned poets such as e.e. cummings and Sara Teasdale, and the pieces all end with the word falling'. "These four Shank pieces really provide a wonderful springboard for this themed concert," explains Barbieri, "though I imagine he probably did not envision them presented quite in this way, playfully interspersed with songs and music from Spain, Bulgaria and Denmark." In addition to VAE's signature style of music from various time periods, languages, and cultures, the three performances will include additional visuals in the form of movement, costume elements, lighting changes, and a returning dancer from some of our previous concerts.. Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted and appreciated.
